Is Cesarean Section is a Business or an Option?

Authored by Araya Mengistu

Introduction

It is an occasion, which brings cesarean section into this world. Cesarean section has been part of human culture since ancient times. The Ancient Roman caesarean section was first performed to remove a baby from the womb of a dead mother. Surprisingly the Roman ruler and general were born by caesarean section. The term cesarean might have different origins despite it is difficult to be sure when and where it is derived. Until the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the procedure was known as cesarean operation and this began to change following the publication in 1598 of Jacques Guillimeau’s book on midwifery in which he introduced the term “section” and then after used widely.

Indications of C-sections

It is true that pregnancy is not without risk. Some women might face a variety of problems during the gestation period. Instances like preeclampsia, blood pressure variations, and injuries from different angles and hence, some of these might require urgent intervention, c- sections. Some of the factors, such as Cephalopelvic disproportion (use of pelvimetry is not advised), Malpresentation-example, breech, transverse lie, Multiple pregnancy, Severe hypertensive disease in pregnancy, Fetal conditions: distress, iso-immunisation, very low birth weight, Failed induction of labor, Repeat caesarean section, Pelvic cyst or fibroid, Maternal infection (eg, herpes, HIV), cervical problems and the likes.

The current Motion to C-section

The health problem of people in the globe could not be covered fully by public services only. Global warming, our living style and others will play a role in the human disease paradigm shift or epidemiological dynamics. Therefore, the participation of private practitioners is so mandatory. The joint work made by the two sectors will contribute a lot in prevention, control as well as eradication of disease/s in the region or country or continent and at a larger scale in the globe. These sectors will give a variety of services to their customers. Of these services, managing delivery cases is the major one where by two cases appear at a time and sometimes create a room for an option to take the necessary corrective measures to save the life of both or either of them depending on the situation. When the worst comes C-section will be chosen as the best and the sole alternate for the circumstance. Actually this is the trend where most of us accustomed with. Nowadays, the reality is changed and the natural birth process is compromised with different modalities by C-section. I am not sure, how many mothers faced difficulty labor and forced to C-section. I do have some reflection that health professionals might choose C-section and recommend for most mothers than giving birth through the natural birth canal. What so ever the reason is, I personally know/knew a number of women obtained their son or daughter via C-section.
As to me this is not a delivery; rather this is an act, which is conducted against the natural process and is a pseudo-delivery. Some data indicated that today C-sections make up about 30% of all births (http://drayalonobgyn.com/vaginal-delivery-versus-cesarean-deliver). I guess this might be greater than 30% and the trend will increase with certainty. At the junction, I want to say Is C-section is a bisuness or an option, when there is a need to do so? Last but not least I want to give some suggestions that could be viewed for the future in detail.

Suggestions

I want to suggest some few points that might need a research. Some might require comparison with the vaginal delivery.
  1. The negative consequences on the mother
  2. The negative consequences on the child
  3. The psychological implications to the mother
  4. The psychological implications to the husband/spouse
  5. The future bond between the mother and the child
  6. The duration of breast feeding
  7. Why women are interested in having C-section
  8. Why professionals advocating/encouraging ( if any) C-section
  9. The time elapse to recycle
  10. The mortality and the morbidity rates
